![]() Alternatively, the average size of a typical residential solar panel is about 65 inches long, 39 inches wide and less than two inches thick. A typical solar tile-including all mounting equipment-puts about 15-20 pounds per square foot of weight on your roof. The average size of a standard solar shingle is about to 86 inches long,12 inches wide and less than one inch thick. Solar shingles are similar in shape and size to traditional roofing tiles. So, solar panels offer much more flexibility in mounting and repositioning. ![]() On the other hand, if you move to a new residence, solar panels can be easily relocated and attached at the new location. Moreover, once installed solar shingles as asphalt tiles get affixed in their position, they cannot be removed or detached from the roof. However, solar panels can be installed on any roof type – including flat roofs. Replacing asphalt tiles, solar shingles are tailored to fit tilted or sloped roofs. Depending on the climate or home design, shingles may not always be positioned to capture maximum sunlight. However, solar shingles are built into the roof, so their location is fixed. This results in more heat dissipation and less efficiency.Īlso, solar panels are installed facing the sun, and they can later be removed and repositioned. That’s because solar shingles are directly attached to the roof and there’s no airflow underneath them. EfficiencyĪlthough solar panels and solar shingles work on the same principle of photovoltaic effect, solar shingles are less efficient. Rather than getting a new roof and solar panels, the combined cost of solar shingles could be more cost- and time-effective. However, for those who were already eyeing a roof replacement, solar shingles can make good long-term sense. There are many providers and solar installation companies to choose from, which increases competition and drives down costs. Therefore, traditional solar panels have the cost advantage for people who already have a well-functioning roof. Shingles are a newer technology, and their installation process is more complex. Solar panels are less expensive than solar shingles. ![]() With a transpedicular approach bilaterally, a total of 4.3 mL of cement was injected through a 13-gauge needle into the vertebral body. Because the patient was requiring intravenous narcotic administration, he was sent to the department of neuroradiology for a T7 vertebroplasty. Manual palpation of the T7 spinous process under fluoroscopy demonstrated severe focal pain at this level. MR imaging of the thoracic spine demonstrated a compression fracture of the T7 vertebral body with a 20% loss in height but no significant edema ( Fig 2 A, -B). During the previous week, his pain had become more severe, and he was requiring intravenous narcotics. The patient had fallen from a horse 6 months earlier, resulting in midback pain during this time course, which was rated as 8 of 10, for which he was taking oral narcotics. Because of long-term intravenous antibiotic treatments, he has not been considered a candidate for vertebroplasty during the intervening 6 weeks since his initial evaluation.Ī 47-year-old man with multiple myeloma presented for vertebroplasty evaluation for severe back pain. The patient subsequently underwent bone marrow transplantation and developed multiple severe pulmonary and dermatologic infections. Because the patient’s pain was improving on pain medications, he elected to defer vertebroplasty. Despite the short imaging interval, no edema was present on the MR imaging examination at the L2 level. There was, however, a new fracture at the L2 level ( Fig 1 A, - B). The previously documented fractures had not changed significantly in the interim. He returned 27 days later for a follow-up evaluation, at which time repeat MR imaging was performed. Because it was difficult to clinically localize the specific levels involved, he elected to delay vertebroplasty and attempt a trial of narcotics. He was evaluated initially for vertebroplasty with an MR imaging of the spine, which showed compression fractures at multiple thoracic and lumbar levels. We present 2 patients with multiple myeloma in whom no edema was detected on MR imaging, despite clinical and imaging criteria for an acute or subacute vertebral compression fracture.Ī 64-year-old man with multiple myeloma presented with severe diffuse back pain. Bone scintigraphy generally reveals increased radiotracer uptake in a linear fashion within the involved vertebral body. The visualized edema can be enhanced with the use of fat-saturated T2 techniques. This edema is manifested as increased T2 and decreased T1 signal intensity. MR imaging generally shows loss of vertebral body height as well as edema in the involved vertebra. Confirmation of a compression fracture is typically performed with MR imaging or bone scintigraphy. 1– 3 Although benign osteoporosis is the most common cause of compression fractures, multiple myeloma is another common contributor. Several studies have documented the effectiveness of vertebroplasty in alleviating the pain associated with acute or subacute compression fractures. In recent years, the use of percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of vertebral fractures has become very common. ![]() In this kid’s bedroom, coral, light green and navy blue accents pop against slate-colored walls. The earthy undertones in Slate Tile make for a grounding hue that pairs well with warm neutrals like Shoji White. Slate Gray Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery featuring a range of emerging regional artists, mid-career artists, and internationally established. A versatile hue for any space, slate looks great when paired with both bright and muted accent colors. It is most commonly found in all kinds of gray, from lighter to darker shades. Sue Wadden states, 'over the past few years, we’ve begun to see popular tones of gray shift from cooler, modern tones to warmer hues inspired by nature. This rock comes in various colors depending on the kind of organic material and iron it contains. Slate can also create a grounding, relaxed environment when united with other, adaptable neutral shades, forming a calming environment with a reference to the outside world. As a neutral, slate plays wonderfully with almost every hue. Chicks of several avian taxa can discriminate between environmental (non-social) odours at an early developmental stage 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24. We focused here on olfactory recognition of parental odour during ontogeny in a model altricial songbird, the Zebra Finch ( Taeniopygia guttata). Furthermore, evidence is accumulating that birds have a functioning sense of smell and make use of olfactory cues in social contexts, including sex and species discrimination 10, 11, nest 12, 13, mate 14, 15, 16, and kin recognition 17, 18. This sensory modality becomes functional in embryos prior to hearing and vision, in a pattern common to other vertebrate taxa 9. The role of chemical perception, in particular, has been notably overlooked in behavioural biology of birds 7, 8. Testing the discrimination abilities of chicks at a very early stage provides insight into the underlying mechanisms of parent recognition and potentially kin recognition. Parent-offspring recognition is therefore presumed absent at earlier developmental stages 3. However, altricial chicks do not recognize parental calls, nor do they develop individual-specific calls themselves, until shortly before fledging 3. Parent-offspring recognition is generally assumed to be based on individual-specific cues, such as vocal recognition. For example, King Penguin chicks ( Aptenodytes patagonicus) easily recognise parents from a crowd of thousands 5, whereas Common Cuckoos ( Cuculus canorus) exploit the lack of recognition of adult Reed Warblers ( Acrocephalus scirpaceus) that feed enormous cuckoo chicks 6. Studies of many avian species highlight extreme examples of both success and failure to recognize parents and offspring 2, 3, 4. Parent-offspring recognition is a fundamental aspect of parental care 1, and birds are no exception. Furthermore our data reveals that kin recognition in birds can develop without any association with a genetic parent at hatching. This is the first evidence that embryonic altricial birds are capable of acquiring chemosensory knowledge of their parents during early development, and retain chemical familiarity with their genetic mother despite egg cross-fostering. Chicks from cross-fostered eggs responded significantly more to the odour of their genetic mother than their foster mother, but exhibited no difference in response to genetic vs. In a second experiment, we cross-fostered eggs and tested the response of hatchlings to the scent of genetic vs. In our first experiment, chicks begged significantly longer in response to the odour of their genetic mother or father compared to the odour of a non-relative of the same sex and reproductive status. ![]() ![]() Here we show that Zebra Finch chicks ( Taeniopygia guttata) are capable of identifying parental odours at hatching. Yet, the possibility that chicks recognise parental odour at hatching has been completely overlooked, despite the fact that olfaction is one of the first sensory modalities to develop, and social chemosignals occur in avian taxa. ![]() Mechanisms underlying parent-offspring recognition in birds have fascinated researchers for centuries. “Despite maybe how it’s looked at times, I love speed,” Berry said in March. Jackson started the song as a way for him to make sense of what was happening in the wake of the attacks, and when the song was finished, he was reluctant to release it to the public - because of its very personal nature and because he didn’t want anyone to think he was exploiting tragedy. Written after the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” stands as one of the most poignant “of the people” songs ever written. Merle Haggard, “If We Make It Through December”.In the two weeks following, "Travelin' Soldier" dropped to Number Three, then off the charts completely. The song peaks on a Friday night at the football game, when the young man's name is read over the loudspeaker as the crowd is asked to pray for the "list of local Vietnam dead." We find our young waitress "crying all alone under the stands," and it's clear that she's crying not only for her lost love, but for her dashed hopes of "never more to be alone, when the letter said, the soldier's coming home." Shortly after it topped the charts, controversy erupted when Natalie Maines said she was ashamed President Bush was from their home state of Texas. Robison released the initial version of the song - the tragic love story of two lonely teenagers whose budding romance is trampled under the weight of the Vietnam War - in the mid-Nineties, but it became a chart-topping hit in 2003 after the Dixie Chicks re-recorded it when it again became relevant. Vince Gill, “Go Rest High on That Mountain”Īustin-based singer-songwriter Bruce Robison was inspired to write "Travelin' Soldier" after a friend was activated for duty in the first Iraq war. After opening with the line "Don't be so sad," the song becomes increasingly tragic, detailing the last moments of a failing relationship before winding down to the closing chorus, "Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft against the window/And make believe you love me one more time/For the good times." Price was immediately taken by these lyrics, but Columbia initially released his take on them as a B side for the honky-tonk "Grazin' in Greener Pastures." Nevertheless, by the end of 1970 "For the Good Times" had become the biggest country song of the year, and in the years following it would become a pop standard covered by artists like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash and Michael Jackson, who sang it for his mother at her 50th birthday party. Though Ray Price first met Kris Kristofferson when the latter was a janitor at Columbia Studios, the singer wouldn't remember the songwriter's name until he heard his "For the Good Times" demo between sets during an 1969 tour. In 1983 and '84, Charles recorded his first two country albums since the second Modern Sounds, and in March of 1985 Willie Nelson duet "Seven Spanish Angels" gave him his first Number One since 1966. When Ray Charles' career reached its late-Seventies nadir, the then 50-year-old singer found that Nashville, of all places, hadn't forgotten about him: Clint Eastwood duet "Beers to You" reached the country Top 50, a Loretta Lynn Opry gig was a rowdy hit and his fall 1980 Hee Haw appearance was so successful that Buck Owens joked, "You keep hangin' around here, and you'll get on steady."
